Consortium delivers pioneering climate analysis for RBS

Leading a consortium of partners, the D-Risk and CLSQ delivered a proof-of-concept climate change analysis suite for RBS. The pilot assessed property-level exposure across the bank’s retail mortgage book and helped lay the foundations for a longer- term climate risk strategy.

Requirements

RBS required a pilot that could assess property-level exposure across its retail mortgage book, looking at both current flood risk and future changes in risk using UK Climate Projections. The objective was to build a clearer evidence base for integrating climate considerations into lending and risk management.

Our Solution

D-Risk and CLSQ led a consortium of partners to deliver a pioneering proof-of-concept climate change analysis suite. The pilot brought together property-level exposure assessment, current flood risk analysis and future climate projections in a way that enabled RBS to begin evaluating risk across its book with greater depth and confidence.

The Results

The pilot is described as having catalysed and transformed the bank’s climate journey, placing RBS in a stronger position to respond confidently to the 2021 BES. The systems and approaches demonstrated through the project went on to form the basis of a longer-term strategy for integrating climate considerations into lending and risk frameworks. The proof of concept was also referenced in the 2019 RBS Annual Report.
