Whaley Bridge portfolio alert for a UK lender

When the Whaley Bridge reservoir incident created an urgent potential threat to homes and businesses, D-Risk was engaged by a leading UK lender to identify affected properties within its portfolio. Rapid geospatial analysis enabled the lender to assess financial exposure and support customers in the potential impact zone.

Requirements

During the Whaley Bridge emergency, the lender needed to understand whether residential and commercial properties in its mortgage portfolio were at risk in the event of a dam failure. The key requirement was speed: the lender wanted a rapid assessment of the potential impact on its customers’ homes, businesses and livelihoods, as well as a clearer picture of the financial exposure it could face.

Our Solution

D-Risk quickly geospatially mapped properties within the Whaley Bridge area and overlaid the potential path of destruction that could follow a failure of the Toddbrook Reservoir dam. It then established the nature and use of each property so the lender could understand the likely impact on individual mortgage holders and prioritise support accordingly. This gave the lender the clarity it needed during a fast-moving and highly uncertain situation.

The Results

The lender was able to establish, at pace, the potential financial risk arising from property damage, property loss and interruption to trading activity. Just as importantly, it could communicate directly with mortgage customers located within the potential impact area and provide support during an already difficult period. The exercise also helped the lender evaluate possible losses linked to business disruption, enabling a more responsive and dynamic approach to client support.
